Durban fitness trainer critical after crash

- THAMI MAGUBANE

THE family of popular Durban fitness trainer Sbahle Mpisane have described her condition as “critical, but stable” after she was seriously injured in a car crash in the early hours of Women’s Day yesterday.

It was still unclear what led to the accident on the Victoria Embankment in the port city.

“At this stage all I can say is that she is critical but stable,” said her father and prominent businessman, Sbu Mpisane.

“We are still not aware of what led to the accident, as she was alone at the time and we cannot go into the details.

“All we can say at this stage is that her condition is stable,” he said.

Rescue Care paramedic Garrith Jamieson said in a statement that a woman, believed to be in her thirties, has sustained critical injuries after the vehicle she was driving veered out of control and crashed into a tree near the yacht mall.

“We arrived on the scene to find the driver trapped in the wreckage. She had sustained critical injuries and advanced life-support paramedics worked to stabilise her while the Durban Fire Department rescue workers used the jaws of life to free her.

He added: “The patient was placed on a manual ventilator before being carefully extricated from the wreckage. She was then rushed to a nearby hospital for the urgent care that she required.

“At this stage, the events leading up to the collision are unknown, however, the SAPS were on the scene and will be investigating further,” he said.

Following the news of the accident, there was an outpouring of support and prayers for Mpisane from her followers on social media and those of her boyfriend, Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune.

Khune posted a picture of himself and Mpisane on his page with the message: “Happy Women’s Day (love). You are in my prayers.”

In response to Khune’s message, TriptroniQ tweeted, “Speedy recovery for @sbahle_ mpisane. May the good Lord be with you and heal you. Hopefully family, friends and boyfriend will give you the necessary support and care in this difficult time. Our prayers are with you guys.”

Nomfundo tweeted. “You are in my prayers. I wish you a speedy recovery.”
