DEMISE OF E-TOLLS JUST A MATTER OF TIME

- Nicholas Thabo Tau RICHARD STEWART

VUSI Mona’s reply on behalf of Sanral denying there is any corruption in the e-toll system is to be expected (The Star Letters, October 7).

Vusi, if it walks like a duck, if it quacks like a duck and it swims like a duck, it IS a duck! Let me put it another way: almost every state-owned enterprise, almost every municipality, and many ministers, have now been exposed for corruption (either in the form of theft or illegal tenders or for giving business to relatives) and hundreds of billions of rand have been “lost”, money which could have been spent in infrastructure such as housing, hospitals, roads and schools.

The result is that “the people” are marching and demanding change.

Vusi says such “untruths” stated by me “have an impact on the country’s image”. You are incorrect, Vusi; the massive corruption already carried out by South Africans in SOEs and municipalities or by assisting in the capturing of SOEs, simply adds to the terrible reputation South Africa has in the world since we lost the great Mandela.

Many international leaders expected South Africa to become another failed nation. However, few expected the failure to take place so fast, and for the cancer of corruption to have spread like wildfire.

Today, the VBS scandal has been partly exposed. (There is, I suspect, much more evidence and exposure of culprits to come.) Here is another case of Africans raping a business and leaving the crumbs for the poor people who have trusted an African bank.

Watch the news and see old black ladies sitting outside VBS offices for weeks on end, attempting to recover money given in good faith to VBS for the burials of their loved ones. Mandela must surely turn in his grave when he sees his own people steal from their brothers and sisters.

Let us see if history proves me wrong. E-tolls will be terminated, staff retrenched, the buildings and cameras sold off by the current president who will see his popularity rocket. Linmeyer, Joburg MADAM & EVE
