The Star Late Edition

Collabs that put the fizz into the music biz

-

AFTER success last year, e.tv’s Coke Studio is back for another season of blended music. For those who’ve never seen it, the show invites musicians from different backgrounds into one studio to come up with a song. Think about the magic Paul Simon and Ladysmith Black Mambazo created in the ‘80s on the Graceland album. So you will see various musicians with their niche sounds try to merge their sounds and come up with hits. The show will be hosted by Nandi Madida and Dream Team member, Trey. We caught up with Trey to find out what to expect.

“You work on something for a long time and feel so fulfilled when it comes to fruition. I am happy with our production,” he said.

Speaking about Madida joining him, Trey admitted he was less experienced than her and was sponging off her skills.

“I love that I am working with Nandi. I am learning so much from her as she has the experience. She is a big help to my presenting skills so I am happy that we are working together,” he said.

The unique thing about Trey being part of this show is that as a musician, he and his crew, Dream Team, have been on the show before.

“I was on the show last season as Dream Team and we did a few songs. That was an amazing opportunity,” he said. “Coming from an artistic background, the way Coke Studio is run has taught me a lot. I love how artists from different backgrounds who follow different sounds just seem to blend. I love Nandi Madida and Dream Team member, Trey, host

on e.tv. watching people show their process of songmaking. Every artist has a different way of doing things and being on Coke Studio meant just sitting there and observing,” he added.

As with the other season, a lot of artists will be featured on this edition of Coke Studio with a special emphasis on foreign musicians on the continent. Trey has seen some of their collaborations and he already has favourites.

“The big ones come to mind. I am talking about Diamond Platinumz and Cassper Nyovest, which was pretty cool, and AKA and Patoranking, which was also really nice. Ricky Rick and Sketchy Bongo also did a nice song which will entice,” he revealed.

Coke Studio, Saturdays at 6.05pm on e.tv.
