We’re reclaiming black pride

- KOKETSO MOSELAKGOMO

IT’S A so-called awakening that’s taking place, a realisation of sorts. The mindset has always been there but somehow we were juked into believing our ways were not good enough, which meant we had to lose ourselves in order to fit into the master plan.

That seems to be changing; Africans are slowly becoming African again. We are loving ourselves like never before. Accepting our skin’s magical ability to soak up the sun, our hair’s superpower to defy gravity but most importantly, we are falling in love all over again with the very essence that is ourselves.

It’s not a matter of having a superior or inferior race, but simply allowing all to coexist and be awarded the same opportunity and exposure.

Times are changing and it seems that our generation is remembering that we are indeed stars wrapped in skin, we are lighting up the way not only for each other but also for the ones coming after us, so they don’t find this world in darkness.

I want black to be beautiful again, in all its shades. I want us to embrace, understand and practise our customs without being bullied into believing we are somehow promoting paganism.

I want my natural hair to be accepted as professional and my African attire to be viewed as trendy with all its colours and patterns. I want us to be black again, and not just black but black and proud.
