SOUTH African actress and TV personality Boitumelo “Boity” Thulo is physically in top form and one to follow for Fitspiration (fitness inspiration). She talks to us about her approach to wellness. Tell us about your fitness journey? I have been athletic since primary school. The decision to take care of my body physically and do the physical work outside sports started in 2012.

There was an offer for me to work out at some place for exposure. I hopped on board and decided to start gyming. I liked the way my body felt after a workout and I started pursuing it on a greater level, including the food I would eat. What is your daily diet? Do you give yourself “cheat days”? Because of the amount of work I do, it is difficult to keep a healthy diet. I try to maintain a healthy diet of chicken breast and avocado… I love avocado.

I do have a cheat day once a week. I think they are necessary. The important thing is to pace yourself and congratulate yourself for being able to take care of your body. What is your training routine? I usually have a personal trainer and if I don’t I use the internet or do exercises from memory. At home I also have small dumbbells, ankle-weights, a yoga mat and a skipping rope. I can go from working out with a medicine ball to flipping a tyre to lifting weights or to using normal gym machinery. Not a lot of cardio, but mainly weight training. Do you use supplements? I do believe in supplements. I don’t think we get enough nutrients in the food we eat because our food is often so processed. I use protein supplements and an energy booster for gym so that I can spend more time there. How do you work on improving your physique? Always watch what you feed your body. You need to give it the right ingredients to fuel it correctly. Also, the energy you keep around you is important – bad energy takes away from your physical health. What three exercises have contributed the most to building your physique? Squats are my best friend. They work out your entire body, your core, thighs. If you want a cute booty you have to squat.

Jogging has helped me a great deal, especially when I have a little slump and don’t get to work out. It helps me to drop weight very quickly, which is fantastic. Another great form of cardio is skipping. It is a workout that works the arms and increases the heart rate which is fantastic. What in fitness would you like to achieve long term? I would love to create something that will assist people in reaching their dream bodies, be it a product, machinery or a supplement. I would love to create something of my own that falls in line with assisting and contributing to the human health and body. It will also have a hand in boosting people’s confidence and restoring their dignity in terms of the way they look and feel. What advice would you give someone wanting a healthier lifestyle? If you have a smartphone and you don’t know where to start, just Google “Where do I start if I have never worked out before?” and you will find a million answers.

There are some people who have more excuses than plans. They will say “I want a summer body”, but there will be a “but” in there. If you really want it you will find the time. Make a plan and make it happen. What is next for you? My collaboration with Sissy Boy is amazing and will keep me busy for the rest of the year. Fitness is also at the top of the list. There are a few things I am working on that are fitness related and I will share when the time is right.
