ETHEKWINI municipality deputy mayor Fawzia Peer handed over a certificate to DJ Phat Joe yesterday, officially welcoming him to the city.

The East Coast Radio DJ, whose real name is Majota Khambule, said he was grateful for the welcome and looked forward to being a part of the community.

“I am also looking forward to playing my part,” he said.

Radio station spokesperson Anisa Ussuph said the warm reception came after the presenter told his listeners two weeks ago that he was looking for something that could make him feel a sense of belonging to KwaZulu-Natal.

“To his surprise, on Friday, eThekwini mayor Zandile Gumede called Phat Joe live on air, warmly welcomed him to the city and promised to make it official,” said Peer.

The radio and TV presenter said he was honoured.

“The big thing is local government and East Coast Radio are celebrating 20 years. I have recently come into the picture. I guess this is just a sign of things to come,” he said.

“I will be applying my mind and working with my resources to make a difference in this community.”

Peer commended the radio station for working with the city on social and socio-economic challenges and helping with fundraising projects.

Phat Joe said he was loving Durban.

“I had the pleasure of being in the king’s company last night with the queen. It was warm, amazing and unbelievable. I was inspired and there is a lot of work I want to do.

“I have always been a workhorse.

“I want to bring that energy and same sort of ethic to this beautiful province.”
