THERE’S A NEW SAINT IN SEASON 3

- MUNYA VOMO

AFTER watching the second season of Saints and Sinners, we did not think there was going to be a third season. There was no room for any growth – or so it seemed.

Mzansi Magic has just announced the return of the show, with a season that is set to be much more interesting. The usual suspects Nthathi Moshesh, Thuso Mbedu, S’dumo Mtshali and Siya Radebe will be back, but they will be joined by a new cast member in Lerato Mvelase.

“The producers of the show called me in to star as a character called Rose. She is a prim and proper Christian girl. You know those kind of people who praise the Lord after every sentence? Yes, that’s her. She finds herself taking the ministry to prison, where she has to spread the word to prisoners. That’s where her path crosses that of Phakamani, and she will never be the same ever again,” she said.

Phakamani is played by Radebe, who coincidentally is in a relationship with Mvelase, so the pair get to be a couple on and off the screen.

“Working with Siya is always amazing. I know some people think it is impossible for people who are in a relationship to work together, but we have a system that works. I find that he is hard on me and we keep encouraging each other. He is so into the show that he even wants to run our lines at home and I tell him no. I want to be a mom at home, so I let him do his (lines) while I listen,” she explained.

“Our characters get (involved) romantically in the story, so that’s the easy part. The hard part is me believing in Rose enough to act as naive as she is. She falls for some of the most pathetic things that Phakamani tells her.

“We all know he’s just trying to use her for his gain but she can’t see that. I, on the other hand, can’t believe someone can be that blinded by love not to see this. So it is going to be interesting for people to see me show that naive side,” she said.

Mvelase is also happy about the rest of the cast on the third season of Saints and Sinners.

“I am so excited to be working with Nthathi Moshesh, who is my friend outside the show,” she said. “Yes, call it nepotism,” she added. Moshesh’s legendary talent has Mvelase in awe.

“Seriously though, she may be a friend but I really respect her talent. She may be laughing with you between takes, but when the cameras come on she automatically gets into character before you know it. If you are not good at what you do then you’ll be thrown off,” she said.

“I also loved working with the talented S’dumo Mtshali. His character is totally different from him as a person, so it was really intriguing to see him become that complex character with ease.

“I also work with him on Isibaya so it is intriguing how he separates the two characters,” she said.

Saints and Sinners 3 airs on Mzansi Magic (DStv channel 161) at 8pm on January 8.
