Reservoirs still taking strain

CONCERNS are rising as several reservoirs across Joburg are still running low due to consumption exceeding the water supply.

Reservoirs affected include the two in President Park, Diepkloof, Rabie Ridge, Honeydew, Bramfischerville, Aeroton and Doornkop.

Johannesburg Water said in a statement that the areas that could possibly feel the pinch due to low levels at the reservoirs include Kaalfontein and extensions, Ebony Park and extensions, Ivory Park and extensions and President Park and extensions.

“We advise residents to reduce consumption to avoid serious water shortages,” it said.

Water was restricted to areas supplied by the Honeydew reservoir between 4pm on Friday and 4am on Saturday. This was prompted by a need to curb high water usage.

Over the weekend, water was also restricted between 6pm and 6am to areas supplied by the Diepkloof reservoir, which has also been running critically low.

Restrictions were also implemented for the Doornkop reservoir between Friday and Saturday, affecting Protea Glen, Dobsonville Gardens and Thulani to name a few.

Joburg residents as a whole have been encouraged to continue using water sparingly so that the reservoirs can recover.

Meanwhile, the level of the Vaal Dam has reached 37.4 percent of capacity following heavy rains in the past fortnight, plus inflows from Sterkfontein Dam.
