Momberg in court with new lawyer, gets postponement

- JUNE HLONGWANE

VICKI MOMBERG made another appearance at the Randburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday, and this time with a new attorney.

Previously represented by Nardus Grové, Momberg’s new lawyer Jenna Clark pleaded for a postponement to give her time to consult with her client, who she met only yesterday morning.

When the magistrate granted the postponement to January 16, prosecutor Yusuf Baba appeared dissatisfied.

“Your worship, on behalf of the state, the defendant has delayed proceedings of this matter two times prior to this appearance,” said Baba.

Baba drew the court’s attention to a notice based on Act 51 of the 1977 section 342 which focuses on unreasonable delays.

While Momberg has suggested she will try to strike a plea deal with the State, Baba was unhappy the paperwork had not yet been completed.

“It’s not like the defendant has been charged for attempted murder. I do not see why my fellow colleague (Clark) would need so much time for consultation,” he said.

Momberg has been charged with four counts of crimen injuria following a verbal racist attack on traffic officers who came to her assistant after she became a victim of a smash-and-grab incident.

After calling 10111, Momberg allegedly called the black officer on the line a “f***ing k****r”.

Without provocation, she is accused of calling the second officer a “f***ing bitch. Unaware her ranting was being recorded in a video, which later went viral, she apparently went on to say, “the k*****s here in Joburg are terrible and I am so sick of it, I really am.”
