SA auctioneer ambassador to global body
JOFF van Reenen, director of South African auction company High Street Auctions, has been invited to be South African ambassador to the National Association of Auctioneering (NAA), one of the world’s largest professional auctioneering bodies with headquarters in Kansas, USA.
Van Reenen, pictured, is a long-standing board member of the South African Institute of Auctioneers (SAIA), which is a member of the NAA.
The appointment of a national ambassador to the NAA comes after a visit to South Africa by NAA president Tim Mast, who says the industry is enjoying growth globally.
“Auctions’ momentum is increasing. There’s no sign of a slow-down. This will have a ripple effect across other global markets in the medium-term, including South Africa. But one shouldn’t view the auction industry merely in terms growth. There is now so much change on a global scale that it makes more sense to think about the industry as shifting and changing with the world economy and the technological environment,” he says.
Mast says the NAA Ambassador concept was introduced to enhance communication between the NAA and US state auction associations as well as with national associations across the globe.
Van Reenen says: “Auctioneering is a multi-billion rand sector in this country now covering the smallest to largest commodities. It is also the fairest and most transparent sales method because prices are set by the market on the day.”
