BOWLS NOTES

-

Congratulations to Sean Lightfoot and Sharon Willey on winning the NIBA Mixed Pairs, sponsored by Old Mutual, at Maritzburg West this past Sunday.

The playoffs started with a good win over the West pairing of Rene Myklebust and Duncan Parsons and then in the quarter-finals on Sunday morning, they had a nail-biting win over James Evertse and Janine de Waal (Collegians); peels playing the last end, the Lynwood pair managed to get the winning shot and proceed to the semi-finals against Fanie Bester and Rowena Muir (Howick).

This was also a closely contested game with Sean and Sharon the winners who went on to meet Sid Siebert and Calsey Hollis (Collegians) in the final. In a very good game of bowls, with some great shots being played by all four players, Sean and Sharon managed to hold onto their lead and close out the game. A fantastic achievement — they now go on to represent Natal Inland in the National Mixed Pairs Competition, which will be held in Newcastle from July 18-21, 2024. Well done to Bruce Hulett and Odette Randelhoff who had a good win over fellow Lynwood members Jenny Smith and Rian Janse van Rensburg, but unfortunately went down in the quarter-finals to Fanie Bester and Rowena Muir.

A good showing by all the Lynwood players.

Dave Larkin, Pat Bennett and Mike Fairhurst coasted home as winners of the Woodstone Classic on 34 points. Second place went to Colin Burden, Gordon Turner and Dutchie Le Roux with Craig Whitby, Alan King and Koos Marais in third spot.

Both greens, below a cloudy and nippy day, were buzzing with zealous bowlers willing to capture a place in the winner’s circle. Thank you to Woodstone Restaurant and Wine Bar and Henry Bro, representing Oakleigh Funeral Home, for sponsoring the pleasant afternoon.

A slap on the back for Fanie Bester Jnr and gentle handshake for his bowling partner, Rowena Muir, for reaching the semi-finals in the Niba mixed pairs championship. Regardless of their gallant and mature bowling, the better team managed to win by a small margin.
