True Love

Ed’s letter

-

I was in primary school when I picked up my first copy of True Love. The pages were brimming with accomplished black women who were dressed to the nines and pictured in the most unbelievable locations. The pages captured me – a dream was born that would go on to fuel my ambition. Fast forward an odd 30 years – with a sprinkling of heartache and hardships along the way – here I am, living my dream.

I’m Mbali Soga, the new editor of True Love magazine. I’ve worked with this iconic brand for eight years now. This year, the team and I plan on saluting black women who’ve done well for themselves – whether it’s climbing the corporate ladder, achieving financial freedom or being a better parent.

I understand first-hand the pressures we put ourselves under – the morning school run while looking immaculate, waltzing into the office like traffic didn’t frustrate you, being 100% productive all day and then rushing back home just in time to supervise homework while whipping up a Siba-esque spread for dinner. It’s a lot! I say it’s enough! Enough of looking at your shortcomings through a magnifying glass and never giving yourself a pat on the back. In this issue, we profile amazing women and celebrities who’ve conquered their fears of failure and dared to chase their dreams.

Our first cover star of the year, Masechaba Ndlovu embodies this concept. She’s a wife, mother and ambitious careerwoman. During the cover shoot, we see her not only as a media powerhouse, but a sexy mother who loves fashion and has a wicked sense of humour. Her story on page 34 will inspire you. Other features you have to read include the tech-jobs-of-the-future article on page 78 – who knows, you could start a whole new career this year – as well as the investigative piece on new schooling options on page 84. As a mom of twins, I know how high the cost of education is, so browse the new affordable options that could be a perfect fit for your child. While you’re at it, page to our food section for lunch ideas – I’m drooling just thinking about it. And, what would women be without a kick-ass workwear wardrobe to start off the year? Our fashion pages have exciting looks you’ll simply die for.

Here’s to owning your crown this year, queens!

This year we’re soluting black women who’ve done well for themselves.

?? ?? Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell is my current read. I actually re-read this book every year as a reminder to always pursue excellence. According to Gladwell, it takes 10 000 hours for you to become a master of your craft. So practice makes perfect!
