Ed’s letter
Having gone through the ups, downs and in-betweens of love, putting together an issue that pays homage to this illusive emotion was very daunting. After some serious introspection, I finally picked up the phone and dialed actress and vintage fashion maven Sthandiwe Kgoroge. She and I are kindred spirits who share a mutual love of expressing ourselves through images that have a #throwback element.
That conversation gave birth to the #Blacklove fashion shoot. It showcases influential inter-generational couples who not only have love in common, but also share a passion for using love to make a social statement. Every featured couple is set on defying negative stereotypes on black love.
This month’s must-read has to be our exclusive interview with Simphiwe Ngema. Sisi, you are strength personified! Watching you crack jokes and break into song and dance at the cover shoot was testament that there’s always a silver lining, even when life is showing you flames.
That said, I’m inspired by the amazing women I met while putting together this issue. They’re the slayers who said ‘goodbye boring 9-to-5, I’m going to chase my dreams!’ These budding entrepreneurs risked it all to pursue what they love, and now they sustain themselves and their families with their earnings.
For those of you who’ll be celebrating the month of love, we’ve put together a tailor-made guide of everything you’ll need to get ‘date night’ ready – from creating delicious Masterchef-worthy DIY dinner for two, to sexy yet affordable ensembles and quick make-up switches.
I wish you a magical month where you not only take care of the ones you love but also spoil yourself with a little of what you so readily give out.
Happy month of love!
