TOP UP THE OIL AND WATER

Do you want to make your car’s engine purr? Then keep the machine lubricated with oil and water. Pieter Niemand, director of the Motor Industry Workshop Association, says, “If you run out of oil, the engine will have no lubrication, seize up and die. This will leave you with a hefty mechanic’s bill.” Aim to get your oil and water checked at least once a month, which is usually a free service at most petrol stations. Simply ask the attendant to check it out for you the next time you go to the pumps. If they’re concerned with the results, don’t wait – replace it immediately.

DO A WHEEL ALIGNMENT

Do you ever feel that your car is being ‘pulled’ in a different direction when driving ? The wheels are probably not balanced. According to the Automobile Association (AA) website, many drivers overlook tyre imbalance. “The purpose of wheel alignment is twofold: it reduces the wear of the tyre, and ensures that vehicle travel is straight, without pulling to one side,” it explains. The AA warns that “wheels that aren’t aligned can lead to uneven or rapid wear of a tyre.” Pop into your nearest wheel balancing centre and let them check the tyres at the same time.

GET A THOROUGH WASH

Nothing drives better than a squeaky clean car that smells brand new. Instead of the weekly wash-and-go, why not take your baby to a car wash where it can get a “spring cleaning ”? A valet service means your car is not only washed, but also polished and waxed. The cleaners will reach all the hidden spots where dirt collects, and sanitise all areas. Valets are pricier than normal washes, so limit them to once every four months.

DRIVE WELL

And finally, what ages your car faster than it’s meant to, is you. Driving recklessly or too fast, changing the gears roughly or braking too quickly can all affect your baby. Drive well. Don’t be forceful or impatient – the better you treat it, the better it will carry you on the road. If something doesn’t sound right when you’re behind the wheel, get it checked out immediately. Your car will love you for it. ■
