Beauty – In full bloom

This season’s signature looks are far from subtle. From sparkles to pink hues, spring has never looked this bright

TWINKLE! TWINKLE!

Sparkle is the latest craze as seen at various fashion shows in New York and Milan. At Topshop, it was applied messily around the eye and smeared across the eyelid for a grungy effect. While at Undercover, chunky speckles in vivid shades of blue and green were placed from the lashline right up to the crease and pulled slightly across the bottom lashline. To make these techniques shine, the rest of the face was left fairly clean, with the skin dewy and lips coated with neutral shades.

LIGHT UP

Contouring is taking a back seat as strobing reigns supreme. However , there is a slight twist to the technique – highlighter isn’t placed over the foundation, as usual. Instead, hydrating serums are layered on, followed by oils and lotions and then to further boost radiance, creamy shine-reflecting illuminators reapplied last. It’s all about maximum shine!

STATEMENT LIPS

Another beauty trend that’s popping this season is focusing on just one area of the face. If you wear a bold lipstick, the lips become the stars of the show and you tone down all other features. This was well-executed at Sonia Rykiel, MSGM and Haider Ackerman. Vibrant reds, pinks and purples stole the shows, with the face neatened with just a little concealer and highlighter.

THE BRIGHTS

There’s nothing that screams ‘spring’ like a bit of colour on the catwalk, right? While the overall tone at fashion weeks stayed neutral, a few designers splashed colours in neon hues like yellows, oranges, pinks and blues washed over the eyelids, on the bottom lash line and tattoed just above the cheek bones.

DOLLED UP

When we think ‘pink’, we think ultra girly or, even, doll-like. And this is exactly why it became this season’s leading hue. Pat McGrath did it beautifully at Valentino, using a dark shade of pink on the eyelids, sweeping it just on the outer crease, brow bone and upper cheekbone. For everyday use, dust a pink eyeshadow on the entire eyelid and bottom lash line and complete with fanning lashes.
