DIGITAL NOMADISM: WORK-LIFE INTEGRATION OVER WORK-LIFE BALANCE

IAN MANGENGA unpacks the buzzword that is promising career nirvana.

Ever since the pandemic hit, I’ve been consistently trying to find the perfect method to achieve this “work-life” balance that a lot of people are chasing. However, recently, a thought came to mind; what if what we really need is work-life integration more than balance? This is because what does “balance” mean in a world that’s on fire anyway? One of the few things I’ve enjoyed about our post-pandemic lives is embracing remote work. Not only has it made it possible for me to show up to work on my terms, but it has also created small windows where I can enjoy life in-between all the deadlines and stand-up meetings. While it has been easy to embrace this new way of work, I find that many other women have struggled with exploring it for various reasons. So, let’s bust all the myths and explore what digital nomadism for women over 40 can be like.

What is digital nomadism?

Once associated primarily with millennials, digital nomadism is now attracting people of all ages, including women over 40. But what exactly is it and how does it differ from the conventional concept of worklife balance? Digital nomadism is a lifestyle that allows people to work remotely while travelling and living in different locations around the world. Unlike the traditional nine-to-five office job, digital nomads have the freedom to choose their own schedules and work environments, often relying on technology to stay connected with their teams and clients. One of the key distinctions between digital nomadism and the concept of work-life balance lies in their approaches to integrating work and personal life. While work-life balance aims to separate work and personal activities into distinct compartments, often leading to rigid schedules and boundaries, worklife integration emphasises blending work and personal life more fluidly and harmoniously. For women over 40, digital nomadism offers a unique opportunity to achieve this integration. Instead of striving to compartmentalise work and personal life, they can seamlessly incorporate work into their travels and experiences, allowing for greater flexibility and fulfillment. But what are the myths surrounding pursuing remote work and digital nomadism as a woman over 40?

while travelling the world. From remote work opportunities in fields like digital marketing, consulting, and e-commerce to leveraging favourable exchange rates around the world and costs of living, women can thrive financially while living their dream of a location-independent lifestyle. With a bit of savvy and determination, financial stability is well within reach. Now, let’s look at the specific benefits of pursuing remote work and digital nomadism as a woman.
