-

Dr John thackery (clive Owen) Brilliant Dr thackery is passionate about improving his patients’ chances of survival. “proficiency is compelling. We are compelled by anybody who is exceptionally good at what they do,” says steven. But John is also a drug-addicted sexist, racist, grumpy so-and-so. cocaine and opium allow him to forget that despite his brilliance, he has far more dead patients to his name than living ones. cornelia robertson (Juliet rylance – she acted in and produced the 2013 indie movie Days and nights) she’s a driven social reformer and insists that Dr thackery appoint algernon edwards as his assistant chief of surgery. But when people look at her, the first thing that they see every time is that her shipping magnate dad’s money is keeping the troubled Knick hospital afloat. Dr algernon edwards (andré holland – Marshall Malloy in 1600 Penn, 20122013) he’s gifted, he’s brilliant, he’s harvard trained, he’s studied the latest techniques in europe and he has an almost superhuman drive to succeed. But his colleagues know that many of their equally racist patients would rather die than put themselves in a black surgeon’s care. Dr Bertie chickering Jr (Michael angarano – he played eddie in 2013 movie empire State) Bertie is training to be a surgeon and he’s eager to learn from the best. he could’ve gone into treating the rich in upscale nYc, but the Knick is where all the experimental action happens. nurse lucy elkins (eve hewson – she was in 2013 movie enough Said and is U2 frontman Bono’s daughter) this naïve young nurse came to the big city chasing adventure and, well done – she’s found it. But the brutal realities of nursing and surgery are going to be an eye-opener and a challenge to her sense of morality.
