Dewald selflessly donates his kidney to nadia, but did he save her life just to risk his own?

adia’s (simoné nortmann) fighting spirit has helped her stay strong since june this year, when she found out that she had kidney failure. the teen clung to the hope that she’d eventually find a suitable donor, even after the organ smuggling disaster in july that floored both her and her family. but finally, nadia can start a new chapter with a healthy kidney after she undergoes a transplant op on monday 17 november. the story may not have a happy ending though, as her boyfriend donor dewald (kaz mcfadden) is left fighting for his life…
not for the faint-hearted
the drama starts a few days before, on wednesday 12 november, when nadia passes out in front of dewald at the deli. dewald gets the fright of his life but he’s also frustrated because “he did a donor test and he can give his kidney to nadia, but she doesn’t want it,” kaz explains. dewald tries everything to get his unconscious girlfriend to come around, but she’s eventually rushed to hospital.
time’s up
herman (deon coetzee) and dewald try to convince a stubborn nadia on monday 17 november to accept dewald’s lifesaving kidney, but simoné explains that her character’s scared for her boyfriend. “nadia’s so afraid that dewald will get sick after the operation. the sacrifice is just too big,” simoné explains. but nadia eventually gives in to dewald’s courageous gesture of love and the op gets underway immediately.
bleeding love
on tuesday 18 november, nadia’s dad herman is ecstatic to hear that the operation was a success and that his daughter is fine. but when he walks into her hospital room, nadia only wants to know how her love is doing. herman smells a rat while enquiring about dewald as the nurse is evasive and refuses to give him more info on the boy’s condition. thursday 20 november sees things take a turn for the worse when nadia overhears that dewald’s been rushed to the emergency operating room because he has internal bleeding. “she’s hysterical,” says simoné. “her biggest fear is coming true!” is dewald going to come out of this predicament alive? or did he trade in his kidney and give up his life?
