a lot can happen in a year. demon-hunting brothers, dean and sam winchester (jensen ackles and jared padalecki) are proof of this when season 8 of supernatural (2005-current) hits sabc3 on sunday 7 december. expect a few new faces and be prepared for shockers!
season 7’s man-eating leviathans were chump change compared to what’s in store for the brothers. not only do they have a new demon problem to sort out, but their relationship is also a little worse for wear after dean spent a year stuck in purgatory. this time round, it’s all about demons and the battle to keep them locked in hell. here are eight other things to know before diving into the new season.
1. time to change
a year’s gone by since dean and his angel buddy castiel (misha collins) ended up in purgatory in the season 7 finale. “what happened there has changed dean’s outlook,” jensen says. “he’s a soldier who is just back from war. it’s going to take him a while to adjust.”
2. family man
sam’s settled down in kermit, texas. he’s enjoying the home life with his girlfriend amelia (liane balaban) and their dog. “there’s nothing holding sam back from a normal life,” jared explains. but he’s settled down too much for dean’s liking and it’s clear that sam didn’t bother to look for his brother. “dean’s upset. he’s like, ‘how can you have gone a year and not tried to find me?’” jensen says.
3. vampire diaries
at least dean’s made a friend: vampire benny (ty olsson). castiel abandoned dean in purgatory and benny was the only guy to help fight off the monsters. “they get tossed in a foxhole together and they come back closer than brothers,” jensen admits.
4. heaven’s missing an angel
castiel’s missing in action and thanks to flashbacks, we’ll get to see what happened between him and dean during that year in limbo.
5. mission impossible
the brothers will face their biggest mission yet: closing the gates of hell. and if all goes well, the demons will be locked up for good. however, crowley (richard sheppard) and an army of angels have plans of their own, soon bringing the battle between heaven and hell straight to earth.
6. bye-bye bobby
since he died in season 7, fans won’t be seeing too much more of bobby (jim beaver) – but keep an eye out for him in episode 19, his only season 8 appearance. jim says that no one really ever leaves the show for good though. “stay hopeful. anything is possible,” he teases.
7. heaven’s not all that great
the great hereafter is in the middle of a violent battle between angels and archangel naomi (amanda tapping) is leading the war. as the season progresses, fans will learn that angels aren’t necessarily the good guys. “people will think ‘she’s an angel… she can’t be that bad,’” amanda says. “then i’ll do something horrible.”
8. home sweet home
after seven seasons of travelling and really bad motel rooms, sam and dean finally find a place to call home: the men of letters bunker. it was home to demon hunters in the ’30s and has a huge collection of books and historical pieces relating to the occult. it’s also called “the safest place on earth”, meaning the brothers will finally catch a break from fighting. “we brought the men of letters into the story not just as a location, but as one of the final pieces of the winchester family tree,” show creator jeremy carver hints.
