In hollywood, there are many ways to make it to the top – raw talent, perseverance, sleeping your way into roles or having a famous family to open doors for you. and that last one is what second generations wayans (2013curent) is all about – nepotism. except this mockumentary is about how having a famous surname means you have to work that much harder to be taken seriously.
the wayans siblings – keenen ivory, damon, kim, shawn and marlon – are comedy legends in the us after writing, directing and acting in successful films like scary movie (2000) and white chicks (2004) and appearing on shows like in living color (1990-1994). and then there’s the littleknown “second generations of wayans”: craig and damien, cousins who, with a few celeb pals, are trying to step out from the shadows and become stars on their own.
meet the cast
onscreen: craig’s “character” is a single dad to 7-year-old son bronx, trying to work things out with his son’s resentful mother rochelle (played by letoya luckett). he’s the more practical and laidback of the pair and is hoping to crack it as a writer.
offscreen: his mom is diedre wayans, sister to keenen & co. his writing and producing credits include the movies scary movie 2 (2001) and dance flick (2009).
onscreen: flashy, charismatic playboy damien is an aspiring actor/director. he’s the hustler who acts like he’s already made it. he’s in an on/off relationship with his best friend actress regina hall, who played corretta on ally mcbeal from 2001-2002.
offscreen: he’s the son of screenwriter elvira wayans, whose siblings are the famous wayans.
george o gore ii
onscreen: george plays the financier of the boys’ company, second generation productions. he’s also desperately trying to get over his trust issues and fickleness when it comes to women. george lives modestly but he’s actually a real estate mogul who’s on the rise.
offscreen: on his way to college to study finance with dreams of becoming an investment banker, he landed the role of michael kyle jr alongside damon wayans in sitcom my wife & kids in 2001. after the show ended in 2005, he’d already earned his directing and producing stripes on the show and he’s continued to work for the wayans family on various productions.
onscreen: the only member of the main cast who’s not playing a fictionalised version of themselves is tatyana. she plays maya, the company’s smart and multifaceted executive assistant who keeps everyone on their toes while maintaining her own ambitions. although her actual job is at her uncle’s law firm, tatyana manages to be damien’s go-to girl at the most random of times.
offscreen: tatyana’s had loads of big tv roles – from ashley on sitcom the fresh prince of bel-air (1990-1996) to tyana on sitcom love that girl (2010-2012).
