while hayley atwell’s not that well known to tv fans, she’s had her fair share of fame in recent years. from working with keira knightley in 2008 movie the duchess to getting physical with captain america’s chris evans in 2011, hayley’s star is on the rise. and now she’s tackling comic book female superhero agent peggy carter in marvel’s agent carter (2014-current), a tv spin-off of marvel’s captain america films.
brit-born hayley grew up vastly different in comparison to her peers in the uk. aged nine, she joined her mom at an empowerment workshop and ended up walking over hot coals… six times. her dad, who’s a practicing shaman, left when hayley was only two years old and moved to kansas in the us. they have since reconnected. the 32-year-old saw a man boil a lobster alive when she was eight and has been a vegetarian ever since. while her friends partied during their teens, hayley became an activist who took part in anti-vivisection and save the dolphins marches. she was bullied at school for being overweight and shy, adding that she was nicknamed “fattie atwell”. hayley realised that she wanted to be an actress when she saw schindler’s list (1993) star ralph fiennes on stage when she was 11 years old. her first on-screen appearance came seven years later though – she was in an ad for pringles chips when she was 18. she met her boyfriend evan jones while working as a model for storm models when she was 19. hayley spotted him in a club, thought he had modelling potential and ended up getting him into the industry. they’re still together. hayley’s a bit of a tomboy and hates make-up. how much of a tomboy? she describes her personal style as “anything i can climb a tree in”.
