- Neo-noir thriller

sin city: a dame to kill for 102 min. r

t he sequel to the 2005 smash hit sin city is here. and it hits the spot, thanks to frank miller returning to turn his graphic novel into a screenplay. with the movie broken down into five chapters, it starts with brute enforcer marv (mickey rourke) waking up with no memory of where he is, how he got there or why he’s surrounded by corpses on the ground. then there’s johnny (joseph gordon-levitt), a good-looking hotshot poker player getting way more than he bargained on when he cleans up the tables at the wrong gambling den – the mob boss who’s just lost a lot of cash takes his hammer to johnny’s quick fingers. plus, there’s the small matter of dancer nancy (jessica alba) returning to get revenge, but will she have what it takes to pull the trigger when her target walks into her crosshairs?

Why it’s hot: to start with, it looks amazing. it follows the first movie and stays pretty much in black and white throughout, but there are a few hints of colour here and there just to add a bit of flair. the cast is hot: mickey’s brilliant at throwing punches and looking like he’s been used as a punching bag, while joseph is flawless as cocky upstart johnny. there’s also jeremy piven, stacy keach, bruce willis and lady gaga to add to the star line-up. but what really makes the difference is the fact that frank miller has been involved. he wrote the original sin city graphic novels and there’s no way that anyone besides him could’ve taken those novels and turned them into a hit movie like this. just be sure to watch sin city first – you’ll feel lost without that base knowledge of the characters and settings.
