In 2013, while screaming fans were watching pop star Justin Bieber perform live for the first time in South Africa, behind the scenes a sinister crime was unfolding. After two elderly workers at the FNB Stadium in Soweto were fired and sent packing without a single cent to their names, one committed suicide while the other avenged his best friend’s death after being cajoled into a plan to rob the stadium of a huge chunk of money. Based on this true tale, Heist (2016current) stars seasoned actor Jerry Mofokeng as retrenched and aggrieved groundsman Talent, who goes from happy-go-lucky to devious, while young hustler 5bob, played by former child star Wright Ngubeni, helps him.

How did the role come about? I was contacted by the producer, whom I’ve worked with before, and when he introduced me to the character, the rest was history. What drew you to it? I’ve never played such a role. I was curious about what would happen if I were to jump onto that wagon. It’s not something I’d have chosen, but the journey of how 5bob loses his mind and the build-up, it’s extraordinary. How do you relate to 5bob? Unlike him, I still have both my parents. He’s driven by independence which is a characteristic that we share. He’s a hustler and that’s where we relate. The only difference is how we get there. How has him growing up without parents contributed to who he is today? We don’t know what made him an orphan, but we’ll soon find out and that’s where it gets interesting. He doesn’t seem aware that he doesn’t have parents. We meet him at the peak of his madness and see that it’s not because he’s an orphan that he does the things he does. He has a dark, dangerous side and a very friendly side. Which do you enjoy portraying more? I enjoy him as a whole. He’s smooth enough to be accepted before letting the snake out. One side needs to survive off the other.
