At just 16, Yara Shahidi’s already made an impression on the world of film and TV. In 2009, she worked with Eddie Murphy in comedy movie Imagine That. Then in 2010 she starred with Samuel L Jackson in thriller Unthinkabl­e and Angelina Jolie in action movie Salt. But what has her in the spotlight now is her role on sitcom Black-ish (2014-current) as angsty teen Zoey Johnson who loves giving her parents grey hairs.

beautiful complexion – her mom is US model Keri Salter and her photograph­er dad Afshin Shahidi is from Iran.

Her showbiz career started with 2

TV ads for McDonald’s, Ralph Lauren and Disney after her family moved to LA when she was six.

Yara’s 13-year-old brother Sayeed 3

is also an actor. He’s known for his roles as Lucas Johnson in sitcom The First Family (2012-2013) and Will Bishop in 2015 on drama series Switched At Birth (2011-current).

Iranian heritage and she can read, write and speak Farsi.

Yara’s childhood dream was to be 6

a criminal consultant for the FBI, but she’s changed her mind and decided to become a historian while continuing to pursue her love of acting. “I love history. In my free time I read historical fiction novels,” she says.

If her head isn’t buried in a book, 7

it’s in a Marvel comic or watching a Marvel movie. “I track what Marvel is doing all day every day online and on social media. The X-Men Trilogy (20002006) and Thor (2011) and Thor 2: The Dark World (2013) are my favourites.”
