At just 16, Yara Shahidi’s already made an impression on the world of film and TV. In 2009, she worked with Eddie Murphy in comedy movie Imagine That. Then in 2010 she starred with Samuel L Jackson in thriller Unthinkable and Angelina Jolie in action movie Salt. But what has her in the spotlight now is her role on sitcom Black-ish (2014-current) as angsty teen Zoey Johnson who loves giving her parents grey hairs.

Yara can thank her parents for her 1

beautiful complexion – her mom is US model Keri Salter and her photographer dad Afshin Shahidi is from Iran.

Her showbiz career started with 2

TV ads for McDonald’s, Ralph Lauren and Disney after her family moved to LA when she was six.

Yara’s 13-year-old brother Sayeed 3

is also an actor. He’s known for his roles as Lucas Johnson in sitcom The First Family (2012-2013) and Will Bishop in 2015 on drama series Switched At Birth (2011-current).

The teen keeps fighting fit with 4

Tang Soo Do – she has her black belt in the martial art.

Her dad has taught her about her 5

Iranian heritage and she can read, write and speak Farsi.

Yara’s childhood dream was to be 6

a criminal consultant for the FBI, but she’s changed her mind and decided to become a historian while continuing to pursue her love of acting. “I love history. In my free time I read historical fiction novels,” she says.

If her head isn’t buried in a book, 7

it’s in a Marvel comic or watching a Marvel movie. “I track what Marvel is doing all day every day online and on social media. The X-Men Trilogy (20002006) and Thor (2011) and Thor 2: The Dark World (2013) are my favourites.”
