Who is Chris Smit? I’m just a guy who is passionate about great food, fine wine and good living! After many years of serving in commercial kitchens around the world, I swapped the frenzied lifestyle of a pro chef for the unhurried life of a country cook and caterer. What got you into cooking? My childhood, with many happy hours spent among the simple yet tasty delights of a farmstyle kitchen. Family secrets were passed down from my gran to my mom to me. And what’s your specialty? Sweet and savoury baking. I’m so addicted to wellbalanced, perfectly spiced Indian curries that I trained under a master for many years to get mine just right. What is your favourite cooking memory? My folks took my siblings and I on many long camping trips where we would fish, bake and cook together as a family. Those happy, fire-side meals are among my warmest memories. So what’s the premise of your show? I’m a passionate advocate of fresh, unpretentiously honest food that’s prepared simply and with love. That commitment to freshness, authenticity and quality is the overriding message of the series. The show also has a lifestyle and light travel element designed to showcase the beauty of Franschhoek, in the Cape. Why did you decide to get into TV? Since taking a hiatus from the cheffing world, I’ve hosted workshops for food enthusiasts – they’ve all been well received and when the chance to do a TV series came up, I seized the opportunity to get my philosophy and message out.
