Between brothers

The Celes have a solution to make sure that Sphe gives the Morokas an heir – despite Mazwi’s infertility!

Bab’Cele’s suggestion leaves Sphe furious and in even more of a tight spot. Weekdays SABC1 (*191) 20:00

Three months ago, Sphe Cele (Pearl Monama) agreed to an arranged marriage with Mazwi (Musa Ngema), but during what’s meant to be the honeymoon phase of their relationship, they’ve had enough ups and downs to last a lifetime. The latest blow is Mazwi’s infertility and it’s the straw that broke the camel’s back – Sphe wants a divorce. “The main plan for this marriage was to provide the Morokas with an heir, but now that it isn’t possible, it turns the whole thing on it’s head!” says Pearl. Sphe’s family aren’t about to let her walk out of the mutually beneficial marriage over a “technicality” though…

PLAN B

Sphe’s stepdad Jack (Vusi Kunene) goes to the Celes on Monday 3 October to sort things out with her uncle Bab’Cele (Jabulani Masilela). “The news shocks the family as much as it did Sphe,” says Pearl. “They’re quick to come up with a solution” – we’ve been sworn to secrecy on what it is… but it won’t sit well with the new Mrs Moroka. “She is enraged and hurt that this [plan] is the route they want as her solution,” Pearl adds. “She’s even angrier when supervillain Jack supports Bab’Cele’s suggestion. She’s aware that her stepdad has plans, but she’s still sickened that he wants to ‘sell her out’ for his own benefit.”

TAKING ONE FOR THE TEAM

It’s not as if Sphe couldn’t find herself a husband, but being traditional has made Sphe a yes-woman and as disgusted as she is by the idea, she puts her family first when her uncle urges her “to do the right” thing on Thursday 6 October. “Sphe was groomed from an early age that her role would be to bear kids with her chosen spouse,” explains Pearl. “The elders’ plan is immoral and she doesn’t want to compromise her values. But also, Jack’s approval of her is everything to Sphe.”

“JUST DO IT!”

Back at the Moroka house, Mazwi has no idea that his inability to get his wife pregnant is being discussed. “Mazwi is confident in himself and Sphe realises that he has no idea of his condition. Besides not wanting to be the bearer of bad news, she doesn’t do anything without consulting with Jack,” Pearl explains. And Jack agrees with the Celes, leaving Sphe in a tight spot: walk away or immorally give the Morokas what they want – an heir?
