Secret love
GC finds a man at last, but his admirer wants to hide their love away from prying eyes.

People flock from far and wide to KwaMashu to visit GC’s (Khaya Dladla) salon for the best hairstyles and juiciest gossip in town. He is a man in demand, but lately someone who’s been hanging around the salon hasn’t been waiting for an appointment – he’s been waiting for GC to notice him. DJ Jojo (Siphesihle Cele) started sneaking GC sweet little love notes and on Monday 10 October, GC figured him out.
“GC is shocked but slowly warms to the idea of Jojo and he ends up really liking him,” reveals Khaya. But it’s not until two days later, on Wednesday 12 October, that Jojo opens up and admits to GC that he’s crushing on the flamboyant hairstylist. Well, it’s high time that GC got a boyfriend, but there’s trouble ahead because the “G” in GC may as well stand for gossip and Jojo’s pretending to be straight…
DON’T SHOW, DON’T TELL
On Wednesday 19 October, when Jojo runs into GC with long-time client and friend Nosipho (Nompilo Maphumulo), Jojo shuts down all the flirting that he has been doing and acts as though GC is nothing to him but a friend – and not a particularly good friend. GC is baffled, especially since he’s not the kind of person to live life on the downlow and fly under the radar. “GC is an open book; what you see is what you get,” says Khaya. “He’s so in love that he doesn’t pick it up immediately when Jojo says certain things. Like if GC wants to take a selfie with Jojo and tag the post #BaeThings [‘bae’ is slang for person of interest/lover]. Jojo doesn’t agree. And then his excuse is that the world doesn’t need to know about them because he only loves GC.”
TOO IN LOVE TO LEAVE
GC knows that he’s worth more than DJ Jojo (centre) fell hard when he saw GC’s (right) spirited conversations with Thobile (left) . being someone’s dirty secret. “He has been in so many relationships before with guys who’re still in the closet. Now GC is looking for a man who will show him love every day and is willing to tell the world about him and how much he loves him,” says Khaya. But by the time GC realises that Jojo is in hiding, he’ll like him too much to just let him go. “He didn’t plan to be part of any form of relationship. This comes as a surprise to him but he then ends up really being in love with Jojo,” Khaya reveals. “People will learn how sensitive GC is.”
SHARING IS CARING
GC isn’t the only person who feels like he’s being shut out. His bestie Thobile (Nokuthula Mabika) is taken aback when she spots Jojo and GC holding hands in the middle of the street and staring intently at one another on Monday 24 October. “Considering that GC doesn’t know how to keep a secret, it bothers him that he can’t share his happiness with the world, especially when he can’t share this with his best friend Thobile,” Khaya adds. “This bothers him so much that he needs to do something about it.” So GC has a lot to think about on Tuesday 25 October while Jojo continues to blow hot and cold like a busted hairdryer…
BOYFRIEND SHOPPING
When it came to Khaya’s input for picking his onscreen boyfriend, talent was at the top of his list of demands. “I work in an amazing space of creativity and our creative director Mmamitse Thibedi has an open- door policy, allowing for actors to suggest storylines and, in terms of casting, who it was. I had a say as I am part of the casting team. I wasn’t even looking for someone sexy or handsome, but I was looking for an amazing actor who’s believable. And lucky for me, after so many hopefuls, I found GC’s Jojo,” Khaya says.
