Too gay to pray?
GC thought that his church would embrace his new love with Jojo – man, was he wrong!

Nobody’s expecting gossipy salon owner GC (Khaya Dladla) to settle down with a nice girl any time soon. But when he walks into church hand-in-hand with his boyfriend Jojo (Siphesihle Cele) on Wednesday 28 December, church board members Mrs Madlala (Ntombifuthi Dlamini) and Hlengiwe (Gugu Gumede) are so shocked by this “scandalous” display that Jojo is promptly fired as the church’s electrical guru and barred from it too. And on Monday 2 January, prompted by Mrs Madlala and Hlengiwe, Pastor Ayanda (Kay Sibiya) carefully asks GC to “tone down his gayness”. But GC isn’t going quietly…
THE BIG STEP
Taking Jojo to church is a huge commitment for GC. “He feels the church understands him and the kind of life he lives. The fact that Mrs Madlala grows really fond of Jojo makes GC feel like his boyfriend has been accepted by his family,” reveals Khaya. “Jojo ends up playing Mr Fix-It for the church as he is such a handyman and that makes GC GC (left) and Jojo cause a stir in the church. so proud. And when his ‘bae’ agrees to go to church with him, it means he is willing to take the relationship to the next level. It’s as if Jojo is almost ready to come out the closet, which would mean the world to GC.” So the reaction that the couple get really is a kick in their teeth.
BETRAYED TWO WAYS
GC feels terribly betrayed by his faith. “He thinks that church people are the last people who would judge him,” says Khaya. But what hurts worse is having his friends fail him, so he lays into Ayanda for his hypocrisy on Tuesday 3 January. GC might have gossiped, but he never shut Ayanda out. “GC has been so supportive to Ayanda with every single drama and situation that he’s been part of. He has supported Ayanda as a DJ, as well as a pastor. After the church kicked Ayanda out, he was also one of the people who fought for Ayanda to come back. And Ayanda understands that GC is gay, so GC feels like Ayanda has betrayed him,” explains Khaya. GC even accepted Ayanda after he killed Pastor Nkosi (Mondli Makhoba) in October this year.
