Willem (Markus Haywood) has no luck with ladies in Hillside and he can’t understand on Wednesday 21 December why he’s getting nowhere with boutique manager Connie (Quinne Brown Huffman). “I want his relationships to work for a little while,” explains Markus. “But he is a guy with issues. It’s a lot of fun playing Willem when it comes to his love quests.” He’s been sending secret admirer gifts to Connie since Friday 16 December, not knowing that they’ve all ended up in the hands of Connie’s flatmate Aggie (Mimi Malasela).

It seems that Willem has a thing for older ladies – Connie isn’t the first cougar to tick his boxes. Before coming to Hillside in 2015, he’d had a secret love affair with an older woman in the Cape and by October 2016, his widow stepmom Felicity (Melanie du Bois) left The Laan after their illicit fling ended with her falling pregnant. On Tuesday 20 December, Willem shows up at the boutique and hints to Connie that he sent the gifts – that’s when she clicks that he’s Aggie’s secret admirer. “Aggie Aggie’s been getting Willem’s gifts for Connie. has been enjoying the attention,” says Quinne, “but when Connie tells Aggie that it’s Willem sending the gifts [on Tuesday 20 December], she can’t help but be disappointed. Aggie sees him as a friend.” The episode ends with Willem sending an invitation for a date to the apartment, thinking that Connie will get it…
TAKING CHANGES
Willem comes calling on Wednesday 21 December but when he asks if Connie is ready for their date, Aggie says she isn’t there, realising that Willem likes her flatmate and not her. Instead of giving up his reservation, Willem takes Aggie to dinner anyway. The next day, Thursday 22 December, Aggie and Connie are having breakfast at the deli when Willem shows up to confront Connie, who makes an excuse. “Connie asks him to forgive her as she only sees him as a friend,” explains Quinne.
Not giving up, Willem asks Connie to go to a Christmas party with him on Monday 26 December as his friend, not his date. At the end of the evening, he leans in for a kiss but Connie snubs him. Not getting the hint, Willem then tries his luck again on Tuesday 27 December while watching a movie with Connie and Aggie but he’s quickly shown the door. When will Willem catch a break?
