Sins of the mother

Desperate Mariaan lies to get back in her family’s good books.

Amorey (top) and Hilda are both wary of Mariaan. Weekdays SABC2 (*192) 19:00

Mariaan (Deirdre Wolhuter) may be back under her estranged hubby’s Chris’s (David Rees) roof but that doesn’t mean she’s been forgiven for her affair in late 2016. Worse is yet to come because Hilda (Annelisa Weiland), the one person who hasn’t abandoned her, also shows Mariaan the door after learning that she’s been fibbing about her memory loss.

LYING IN WAIT

It seemed that Mariaan’s family had lightened a bit with her at the end of December 2016 after the ceiling fan that Oubaas (Pierre van Pletzen) had installed fell on her head. Mariaan couldn’t remember her affair from November and everyone believed that she’d lost her memory… but it was just another lie from Mrs Welman. It’s on Tuesday 3 January that Mariaan lets her friend Hilda in on her scheme. “While Mariaan was at the hospital after the fan fell on her head, she heard her daughter Dr Alexa (Carina Nel) saying that she could have possibly suffered memory loss. That’s the moment that Mariaan decided to fake her ‘condition’,” says Deirdre. Hilda is furious and she makes it clear to Mariaan has sunk to new lows this time. Mariaan on Wednesday 4 January that she isn’t welcome at her and Oubaas’s flat. Mariaan returns on Thursday 5 January hoping that her friend will have cooled down, but the time to think has only made Hilda angrier. “She still can’t believe that Mariaan would lie like this to her family,” says Deirdre.

ALARM BELLS RINGING

Mariaan isn’t going to let that ruin her plan though and she continues her lie. She even cons her youngest daughter Amorey (Kristen Raarth), pretending that she doesn’t know why daddy’s girl Amorey is so off towards her on Friday 6 January. “Amorey has always been protective over Chris. The youngster is still furious with her mom over her affair and Amorey is sceptical about her mom’s convenient memory loss, especially when Mariaan points out ‘ this and that’, because it’s stuff that she’s meant to have no recollection of,” explains Deirdre.

Amorey confides in her brother Rickus (André Lotter) on Monday 9 January of her suspicions that their mom is conning them. Rickus is a mommy’s boy and defends Mariaan, telling his sister to stop being so hard on their “ill” mom. At the rate Mariaan’s carrying on, she’s not just going to lose her hubby and daughters, she’ll lose her son too!
