Young couple Vusi and Katlego (Raphael Griffiths and Anne Modula) have dated since high school and they’ve always been responsible and used protection during sex. Except that one time on Wednesday 18 January… “When young kids are reckless, they must take responsibility for their actions…” hints Raphael.

TEETHING TROUBLE

In true soapie style, it’s a day later, on Thursday 19 January, when Kat realises that something doesn’t feel right and on Friday 20 January, her doctor tells her that she’s pregnant. Raphael says that his character isn’t ready to be a dad either. “Vusi’s own father Edward (Mpho Tshedu) wasn’t present in his life and neither was his mom Thandaza (Sindi Dlathu), who happily sent him off to boarding school.” Vusi makes his side clear: terminate it now! “In his head, abortion is the first option that springs to mind. He doesn’t want a baby because he has his post-grad studies in business to look forward to, which is a lifetime opportunity that he isn’t willing to give up,” says Raphael.

MAMA’S BOY

Scared, Vusi runs to his mom on Mon- day 23 January and while “Thandaza is shocked, she shows understanding. She never liked Katlego but now she’s showing empathy about the situation and encourages Vusi to have the baby,” says Raphael. Katlego’s struggling with the news herself and feels abandoned on Tuesday 24 January. Raphael adds that “Kat wants to keep the baby but like any young adult, she doesn’t know about the hard work that it takes”.

BIG CHOICES

Thandaza has a plan for the expecting parents on Wednesday 25 January: she will take care of her grandchild and Kat while Vusi is finishing his studies. “Vusi thinks that his mom’s plan is perfect – it will give him enough time to make money and start a business to support their family,” says Raphael. But there’s a problem: Katlego isn’t onboard and sees an illegal “backdoor” doctor on Thursday 26 January for abortion pills. On Friday 27 January, Kat tells Vusi that she isn’t ready to be a mom and that the pregnancy should be terminated. “She has pills but she’s having second thoughts about the baby. Vusi is secretly happy if she takes the pills but he’s being selfish deep down and only thinking about himself,” says Raphael. He hints that “this pregnancy is a shock to Katlego. Maybe she’s strong enough to face the consequences of unprotected sex after all. Maybe…”
