Cash crusader
Stokkies’ quest for easy money lands him in a lifethreatening situation.

In some senses, ex-jailbird Stokkies ( Wayne van Rooyen) has it all. He’s dating Chantal (Altovise Lawrence) whose son Garland (Leavante Shebe) he clearly adores, he has a steady job and he’s rehabilitating his image. But Stokkies still has dreams. “He’s working at Safe ’n Clean as a cleaner and I really think he wants to move up, but that’s not happening,” explains Wayne. “He wants to give Chantal the life that she deserves. And I don’t think he’s feeling great about himself because here’s Chantal who’s beautiful, who’s doing well at her job, and why is she here with a cleaner?” So when opportunity knocks, Stokkies doesn’t look too at closely what’s on the other side before flinging the door wide open.
EASY, SLEAZY MONEY
When Mangi (Kagiso Modupe) comes knocking on Tuesday 24 January, his request looks simple on the surface. All that Stokkies needs to do is to set up a meeting to lure his fellow former prisoner Bongani (Katt Ramaphakela) – who’s now made trouble by kidnapping a man’s daughter and forcing her into prostitution – out of hiding. Once Bongani shows, he’ll be trapped and the dad can do what he likes with Bongani, while Mangi and Stokkies collect the reward. “He knows that it’s dangerous,” says Wayne. “I think he’s trying to convince himself that if it’s done right, it’s in and out and you walk away with cash. It’s done and over with. He knows the risk but the cash is appealing. He genuinely tries to go against that but he can’t help himself.”
THE CASH TRAP
But when Mangi and Stokkies’ trap snaps shut later that week, Stokkies finds himself face-to-face with Bongani. While his face gives little away, inside Stokkies is screaming. Wayne reveals, “The plan wasn’t for Bongani to know that he was involved. So that exposes him and all of a sudden the stakes are raised even higher. Stokkies is terrified. Possibly his life is in danger, possibly Chantal and Garland’s lives are in danger.” Suddenly everything that he’s put at risk by opening the door flood through Stokkies’ mind. There’s nothing harder than easy money and Stokkies is about to learn that!
