Addicted to love
Katie and Bill’s kind job offer accidentally exposes Brooke’s devastating inner struggle.

Katie Spencer (Heather Tom) thought that she was doing her sister Brooke (Katherine Kelly Lang) a favour on Monday 16 January by offering Brooke a position at Spencer Publications, so she’s a little puzzled by Brooke’s strange reluctance to jump aboard. But when Katie’s husband Bill (Don Diamont) chased down Brooke for an answer on Tuesday 17 January, she behaved like a cornered animal. And on Wednesday 18 January, the recovering alcoholic waves a bottle of vodka while admitting to her exfiancé Bill: “I’m haunted by memories… about Aspen, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Monte Carlo. It’s hard to close the book on those memories. I’ve tried. They’re just so precious. And yet so distant and… I have to keep them that way. That’s why it’s not a good idea for us to work together. Seeing you every single day – that won’t work, Bill. Not for you. Not for me. And not for Katie.”
ONE SLIP OF THE LIPS
When Bill insists that she’s just a little messed up because she’s lonely over the holidays, Brooke pleads, “You know what you’re doing? You’re feeding my demons.” She shows Bill the bottle and shouts: “You’re both the same. You are addictions that I need to remove myself from.” Brooke begs him not to pressure her and when she says goodbye, she proves her point by reaching up to kiss him. On Thursday 19 January Brooke tells a baffled Bill, “That is why I need to turn down your job offer.”
LOVE TRAP
But when Katie offers a hatful of reasons for wanting to work together, a weakened Brooke gives in and accepts the job – the emotional equivalent of restocking her liquor cabinet. And she’s not the only one playing with fire. “Bill is committed in that his love for Katie is genuine and so is his love of his family. At the same time, the connection he feels with Brooke is also soulful and genuine. It creates tremendous internal struggle and conflict for Bill,” says Don.
