Kings’ Casino is closing its doors and even devious David (Antony Coleman) can’t wiggle his way out of this one. High Rollers’ (2013-2017) court application to prevent the SABC’s abrupt cancellation in November last year (in breach of their contract) has been dismissed. Production officially stopped on Thursday 15 December and producer Luke Rous of Rous House Productions says, “It’s devastating. We have already issued letters of termination to the cast and crew. We have started wrapping sets and props.” Rous House has had to dismiss over 100 staff.

ROLL WITH IT

High Rollers fans will have to keep their eyes on the “dealer” in January and February thanks to the SABC’s sports scheduling. The show falls off the schedule completely from Monday 16 January to Friday 3 February, and from Monday 6 February it will air Mondays to Wednesdays until the end of February (aside from on Tuesday 7 February when it’s replaced by cricket). Luke confirms that all 156 episodes of season 3 have been filmed but may not air. Should the SABC continue showing the soapie after February, the finale will air on Monday 27 March. “Viewers will be left hanging as there is no conclusion to the storylines,” Luke admits.

BETTING THE HOUSE

Rous House Productions has lodged a complaint about the SABC breaking its contract with ICASA (Independent Communication Authority Of South Africa). Their case will be heard in February 2017 and Luke says, “I think this decision sets a dangerous precedent. Shows must be careful of the SABC.”
