Better Late Than Never
Season 1 M-Net (*101) 19:30 Lifestyle “This proves that you’re never too old to try something new,” laughs 71-year-old Henry Winkler (The Fonz in iconic series Happy Days, 1974-1984). He’s the star and exec producer of comedy-styled reality show Better Late Than Never (2016-current) and joining him on his luxuriless four-episode journey through Asia in season 1 is 85-year-old William Shatner (Captain James T Kirk from sci-fi series Star Trek, 1966-1969). There’s also 68-year-old ex-football player-turned-pundit Terry Bradshaw and boxing legend George Foreman, who’s 68.
Henry at least had the mind to take along a youngster to keep the rowdy older guys in check as they tick off items from their bucket list: 33-year-old comedian Jeff Dye. “He’s our bag carrier and human navigator,” says Henry. Season 1 sees the fearless five heading to Tokyo for the start of their adventure and they tackle “some of the strangest things that we’ve ever experienced,” laughs Henry. “These included eating parts of animals we didn’t know were edible: dirt-covered steak, cow penis soup and other disgusting stuff,” William adds.
Some of the other fun things viewers can look forward to is the guys making their way to Mount Fuji in Japan, and William exploring Buddhism to find his zen. They also go clubbing and film a music video with South Korea girlband Girls Generation, as well as stepping into a Thai kickboxing ring. The only downside according to George was the humidity – “It felt like we were wearing wet clothes. It was uncomfy but fun.” And as the guys explain, their different backgrounds and personalities played a big part in the success and why it’s been renewed for season 2: “Our stumbling personalities came together as we tried to figure out what they wanted without getting killed,” laughs Henry.
