What happens when social media, TV and comedy come together? The result is Throwback Thursday (2017-current) – a light-hearted 30-minute talkshow that looks at popular hashtag events on Twitter. It’s hosted by funny guy and radio DJ Skhumba Hlophe, “Who never strays from his home-grown voice,” says Throwback Thursday’s director and producer Wanani Rantloane. It’s a “reflection of what Africans look and sound like on social media and it highlights how much content is in our faces with a comedic element.” Wanani lets us in on how it came about and more…

What inspired the show? We wanted to create a show where South Africans could laugh about themselves by looking at what they say on social media. The idea took a lot of research and we spoke to people who make waves on social media to know what’s out there. How do you choose the content that’s featured? We take moments from all over the continent. Our research team chooses tweets, photos and videos that apply to the episode theme, like relationships in the 21st century, selfies and money. If it’s on social media, it’s on the show. And what makes DJ Skhumba the perfect host? He’s hilarious and true to his roots. He’s authentically African and his material doesn’t conform to Western culture, so choosing him was a no-brainer. Will it just be Skhumba and the crew or will you have guests and an audience?
