Pure Genius

-

Movie fans know him as “that guy” from Julia Roberts’ movie My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997), but Dermot Mulroney is holding his own in leading man roles. Like in med drama Pure Genius (20162017). He’s taking on the role of Chief Of Surgery Dr Walter Wallace and being stern is something he knows all about…

1 “My dad [Michael] was a law pro

fessor. Always upright, strict and strong,” says the 53-year-old. “My mom [Ellen] was the fun one – and she got me into acting in elementary school.”

2 He’s more of a Western fan than

of dramas – he played “Dirty Steve” in 1988 cowboy movie Young Guns with Charlie Sheen and Kiefer Sutherland, adding, “I don’t like horses!”

3 What he does like is the cello – he’s

played since he was seven and was part of the orchestra scoring 2013’s sci-fi movie Star Trek: Into Darkness, as well as 2016’s Star Wars: Rogue One.

4 Unlike many celebs, Dermot’s love

life has been more or less stable. He was married to actress Catherine Keener from 1990 to 2007 and they have 18-year-old son Clyde. He married Italian cinematography-agent second wife Tharita Cesaroni (44) in 2008 and they have two daughters, Sally and Mabel Ray, who’re both under 10.

5 As for his acting bestie, “Easy – it’s

Julia,” he says. “I’d never seen any of her movies before we worked together but we just clicked. And I like her more because her son plays cello.”

6 And he’s never thought about

plastic surgery to fix the scar under his right nostril. “I fell on glass [aged 3], so it’s been with me my whole life. It’s part of me and while Dr Wallace could fix it, I’m pretty happy with it. It’s where it’s meant to be,” Dermot says.
