From fun drunk shenanigans in the kitchen on Thursday 30 March, Katie Spencer (Heather Tom) rapidly falls into degrading desperation on Friday 31 March. Alcohol exaggerates Katie’s already extreme ups and downs from by her (now un-medicated) bipolar disorder, along with her insecurities over her man-snatching sister Brooke (Katherine Kelly Lang).

On Friday 31 March, Katie tells her husband Bill (Don Diamont), “I believe you when you tell me that you love me and that you’re committed to me and our family, but… you can’t ask me to forget all those promises that were broken when you knew that Brooke wanted you.” And when Brooke accuses her of clinging to the bottle, Katie hurls her drink against the wall and yells, “You think I need this?! No! What I need from you is a little respect! You think you gifted me back my husband in some magnanimous moment! You think that he is yours to take and yours to give!” But when Brooke asks Katie what she really wants, Katie sobs in her arms and asks, “How could anyone love me?”

Katie promises to stop drinking for her family’s sake, but after Brooke walks away, Katie picks up the shattered glass and raises it to her mouth for that last sip. “She is a bit of a hot mess right now,” explains Heather. “I think that for her, it isn’t as much of ‘I have to have a drink!’ It’s more of a self-deprecation thing. She’s at the bottom of where she can be and taking that drink out of the broken glass makes sense to her at that moment. Katie has lived her whole life feeling this inferiority and that doesn’t go away just because you marry the right man and have a life you dreamed of.” NB! See more on p24.
