Mozart In The Jungle Season 3 Fridays (from 28 April) M-Net (*101) 22:30

Mozart In The Jungle’s (2014- current) classical musicians are on strike, but that doesn’t mean they’re at home watching TV. The orchestra is on the move as season 3 starts and won’t reunite until the doccie-themed episode 7 (9 June), set in new York jail Rikers Island, where the cast really performed live in the jail-yard. We’ll also be on a journey with the leads and the locations couldn’t be more glam as conductor Rodrigo (Gael García Bernal) hunts for diva La Fiamma (Monica Bellucci) in Italy.

WHEN IN VENICE…

La Fiamma’s episode-1 comeback sees her perform a Don Giovanni duet opposite reallife tenor Placido Domingo as they drift on floating

stages near the Accademia Bridge. It’s by no means Placido’s first TV gig and he jokes, “I became a lot more famous when I sang a duet with Miss Piggy (in the 1982 Muppet Show special Night Of 100 Stars).” But fans will still get a kick from the over-the-top setup and gorgeous scenery.

CONDUCT YOURSELF

And while Rodrigo’s conducting the greats, Hailey (Lola Kirke) will also be in Venice, but playing oboe with rude cellist Andrew’s (Dermot Mulroney) is getting old very fast. Luckily help is at hand and Hailey will get to conduct, which was a big ask for Lola and Hailey. “Female conductors say that this physicality is difficult. It’s masculine, very rigid and I think that women are less rigid,” says Lola. And while the cat’s away in Venice, the mice in NYC will play – there’s some romance for symphony boss Gloria and ex- conductor Thomas (Bernadette Peters and Malcolm McDowell) !
