Blood & bone
Mxolisi wants to be good, but with two deadly dads in his life, the poor guy doesn’t stand a chance.
Former carjacker Mxolisi (Nay Maps Maphalala) is on the path of righteousness. “He obeys his biological father Pastor Mdletshe’s (Glen Gabela) instructions to work at the panelbeaters. He’s giving back to the community at the very place where he worked for crime. And Mxolisi’s love for Nkunzi’s (Masoja Msiza) daughter Zekhethelo (Nyalleng Thibedi) gives him confidence to work with Nkunzi because that’ll mean he can get closer to her.” But both of these fathers are about to steer him right off the path and crash Mxolisi back into darkness.
DEADLY MDLETSHE?
When Nkunzi, KwaMashu’s new knight in shining armour, hints that the pastor committed murder in Swaziland, Mxolisi goes into an investigative frenzy on Wednesday 3 May. He knows that his dad is hiding something because every time Mxolisi asks him about Swaziland, the pastor clams up. “Mxolisi discovers certain things about his dad’s time in Swaziland that he isn’t accounting for”.
NKUNZI EYE-OPENER
And as Mxolisi is wrestling with doubt on Thursday 4 May, Nay reveals that “Nkunzi says, ‘Let’s go for a drive,’ him and Mastermind (Ntokozo Dlamini), Nkunzi and Sbu (Simphiwe Majozi).” The drive a long way and the whole time Mxolisi is asking questions but no one is answering. “They stop in some dodgy area. Nkunzi, Mastermind and Sbu get out, leaving Mxolisi in the car.” And while he’s sitting there, the others bomb an ATM in front of him! Mxolisi’s image of Nkunzi as a charitable man, a force for good, goes up in smoke and flames. And so does love, because Mxolisi can’t share this with innocent Zekhethelo. “She’s the love of his life. He wants to share himself in a beautiful light, but now that Zekhe’s dad is dragging him back into that world, he doesn’t feel proud,” explains Nay.
IN THE BLOOD & BONE
Having both father figures exposed as violent men will really do a number on Mxolisi. “It just makes him feel like can he really be anything in life? Is he also on the path of being a murderer and a killer? He now starts feeling like, ‘Maybe this path of crime is my life…’”
