Ex-con Ace (Sello Sebotsane) has waved goodbye to prison in new soap Broken Vows (2017-current) and hello to fixing his broken family and making money. His main mission is to win back the trust of his children Azania and Uhuru (Enhle Maphumulo and Thapelo Mokwena), one good deed at a time. “Ace is manipulative and uses people’s emotions to get them on his side,” says Sello.

Like when he learns that his ex-footballer son-in-law Chris (Emmanuel Castis), who’s addicted to painkillers, has driven over a homeless man on Wednesday 10 May. Ace plots to save Chris so that he can be with Azania when their baby is born. “He’s shocked [about Chris’s addiction issues] but Ace wants him free. He will do anything to give Azania her happy family,” says Sello.

The cops arrive on Thursday 11 May and Ace tells Chris to deny all charges. While Chris tries to get help with his addiction on Friday 12 May, Ace has his solution: framing his partner in crime Harold’s (Peter Terry) son [whom we won’t see onscreen]. “Ace doesn’t care if it’s right or wrong to let another person rot in jail for this. He just wants his family together and to pick up where they left off,” explains Sello.

On Monday 15 May, Ace lends pregnant Azania a helping hand with planning her babyshower, of all things. Ace now has the opportunity to play doting dad after being in jail while Azania grew up and also give her a present: a clean and sober Chris. And Ace always gets what he wants. On Friday 19 May, he threatens Chris and orders him to go to rehab and Sello explains that “Ace is trying to be a father to Azania now and a grandfather. He will stop at nothing”. Best Chris remember that when he skips rehab… NB! See p33.
