The October house has been deathly quiet since Jerome (Danny Ross) passed away in April following a car crash and his sister Nicci (Gerwen Simon) moved to the US for work. But it’s been a little livelier since Zoe (Lauren Joseph) moved in on Monday 22 May. She is Ian’s (Abduraghmaan Adams) niece but there’s something suspicious about her stay.

INSTANT FAMILY

“Zoe had a tough upbringing,” explains Lauren. “Her dad was an alcoholic, like Grampa October, but she tried to make something of her life and worked on a cruise ship.” She is living with the Octobers until the next liner comes along but Ian’s wife Bridgette (Denise Newman) is sceptical. While she chalks it down to an over-active imagination, Bridgette puts her thoughts aside and starts bonding with Zoe from Wednesday 24 May.

“It’s understandable,” says Lauren. “Bridgette misses her kids and with Zoe here now, the house feels less empty.” Lee-Ann (Portia Joel) sees what’s going on and warns her sister Bridgette later on Wednesday 24 May that Zoe will never replace Jerome or Nicci and that she shouldn’t get too attached to Zoe, who could leave at any time. But Zoe’s loving life in Ruiterbosch and on Monday 29 May she boasts about her “luxury accommodation” to her new pals at Suidooster Properties, architect Tim (Marco Spaumer) and receptionist Danni ( Vashti Prins). Suidooster Properties boss Ian isn’t pleased when he hears what Zoe’s saying and he starts questioning his niece’s intentions. “Ian thinks that she is just after his money and he wants to find out the truth,” explains Abduraghmaan.

BRAWLS & MAKING UP

Ian and Bridgette confront Zoe on Tuesday 31 May and ask her why she really showed up. “Zoe is upset and stunned by the interrogation and can’t believe that they think she’s being deceitful,” says Lauren. She threatens to pack her bags and leave if that’s what they want. But after a tense few days, they forget the matter and on Monday 5 June they make peace, followed by a “make-up” braai at the October house on Tuesday 6 June. Everything’s going well until Zoe gets an emergency phonecall. All that Lauren will hint about the mysterious call is that “the news Zoe gets could wreck her plans”. Given that making Ian angry isn’t the wisest thing to do, could he be behind the call to get Zoe out of their lives?
