Hap­pi­ness for Justin Bonello is sit­ting around a fire with friends and a braai – what else did you ex­pect?

The fi­nal of The Ul­ti­mate Braai Mas­ter (2012-cur­rent) was great, but I have al­ways won­dered where Justin Bonello’s love for braai comes from? – JULIAS, VIA EMAIL “It’s some­thing from my child­hood,” says the TV chef. “I was lucky and our fam­ily loved to get out of the city ev­ery week­end and visit vast, open spa­ces. When you’re in those wide open beau­ti­ful spa­ces, only the African TV (fire) and a braai will do.” He adds that whether it was mus­sels, per­lemoen or meat, “From those early days, there was also the ne­ces­sity of hav­ing to know what to do with na­ture’s bounty. Those cook­ing ex­per­i­ments were re­spon­si­ble for me learn­ing to love cook­ing on the open fire.”

Justin’s been braai­ing for­ever.
