Season 12 Vuzu AMP (*103) 21:30 Sci-fi
Demon-killing brothers Sam and Dean Winchester (Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles) have literally been to hell and back in sci-fi show Supernatural (2005current). But in season 12, they’re facing their biggest challenge yet: their mom Mary (Samantha Smith), who is back from the dead. “This show has always been about family,” says producer Andrew Dabb, “especially for Sam and Dean. They haven’t seen their mom in 30 years and with her back, the family dynamic is given a shocking twist.”
Fans have only seen Mary once or twice, like in the very first episode when she turned into a demon and was burnt to death. She was returned to the boys in the last few seconds of season 11 (2016) when Amara (Emily Swallow), aka God’s sister The Darkness, reconciled with her brother and released Mary as a thank-you to Sam and Dean. “There are mixed emotions when the three reconcile,” says Jared. “For Sam and Dean, Mary’s a stranger and they are strangers to her.” Jared adds, “There is vulnerability that comes with her. If something happens to her, the boys will have to look for her and vice versa. They have to bring her up to speed about their job too.”
Besides Mary, the brothers are also hunting Lucifer (Mark Pellegrino), who’s hoping from body to body – episode 8 (24 August) sees Lucifer possess the US president and he finds a mate to carry the son of Satan. Demon hunters The British Men Of Letters are also back after a quick visit in season 11 and the rule-bound hunters “see the brothers as loose cannons and they want to stop Sam and Dean,” says Jensen.
