Season 3 SundanceTV (*108) 21:00 & 21:50 Sci-fi

Zombie apocalypse series Fear The Walking Dead (2015-current) is holding no punches as season 3 starts tonight: it’s killing off a main character whose death will push the series in an entirely new direction. And more are on the way, explains creator David Erickson, adding that “we needed to go to a very, very dark place and then try to find a reason for the story to continue”.

The third season sees Madison (Kim Dickens) “burdened” by trying to keep her people alive. “She becomes merciless and does whatever she needs to survive and save her family,” says Kim. Season 2 ended in October 2016 with Madison and her family holed up in a hotel surrounded by zombies. But flee-ing lands them in a bigger mess – they’re captured by soldiers and taken to “The Ranch”, a facility where a worse fate than being eaten alive awaits.

Russell Otto (Dayton Callie, Police Chief Unser in Sons of Anarchy, 20082014) runs The Ranch, where he and his soldiers were “doomsday preppers” and were ready for everything except the living dead. Although Madison hopes that it will be a safe haven, series boss David hints that The Ranch may not be all it appears – and Madison will definitely not be a permanent resident. She suspects something is wrong with Russell’s gun-toting son Troy (Daniel Sharman, werewolf Isaac Lahey in seasons 1 to 3 of Teen Wolf, 2011-2017).

Madison’s son Nick (Frank Dillane), who was AWOL at the end of season 2, also ends up at The Ranch and her daughter Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey) finally learns to “relax” when she joins a “Sunday school” with other teens – their idea of singing Bible songs is smoking pot and talking to a zombie’s head.
