Love you, bro
McGarrett and Danno’s bantering buddy-cop relationship gives us “the feels” in Hawaii Five-0.
Hawaii Five-0 Season 7 Tuesdays M-Net (*101) 19:30
We enjoy explosions and near-death experiences as much as the next person, but without a heart, an action-based series is as good as dead. Hawaii Five- 0’s (2010- current) heart is the bro-show with McGarrett (Alex O’Loughlin) and Danno (Scott Caan). Season 7 has seen the backslapping, shoulder-massaging, bantering (rather than bickering) return in full force after few tetchier seasons. It’s deeply relatable to anyone whose friends are their family and it is that emotional grounding that helps the show’s daring danger feel real.
WHAT FRIENDS ARE FOR
Danno is eager to introduce his sister
Bridget (Missy Peregrym, Andy in Rookie Blue, 2010current) to his best mate when she visits on Tuesday 1 August. McGarrett thanks Bridget for send-ing him and Danno cookies while they were recovering in hospital in the season 6 finale (in November 2016) – you know, when Danno gave McGarrett part of his liver. “These guys are blood brothers, but now literally they are,” quips series creator Peter M Lenkov. Later in the episode, their colleague Kono (Grace Park) smiles when she sees Danno leading McGarrett around with a hand on his lower back. It looks pretty normal to her, even though Danno is actually using the gesture to explain to McGarrett why he thinks some guy was creeping on his sister.
BEST MATES
The guys’ physical closeness is enjoyable to watch because it’s an expression of a very real devotion. Drawing on his experiences working with Scott, Alex explains, “It’s nice to work with your mate. Work becomes less painful. I think that our dynamic is important. It’s part of what makes this appealing. I love seeing what our dynamic adds.” Whether that dynamic brings out their infamous car guments or Danno drawing a heart in the air and pointing at McGarrett (in season 1, 2011), we’re just glad to be along for the ride.
