Mumsy on the run

Pastor Mdletshe’s secret daughter has mysteries of her own – and now one has followed her home.

-

Pastor Mdletshe and MaNzuzu’s (Glen Gabela and Leleti Khumalo) marriage was hanging by a thread when Mumsy (Nomcebo Gumede), his illegitimate daughter from Swaziland, arrived unannounced on their doorstep on Friday 7 July. But on Wednesday 16 August, Pastor Mdletshe puts a stop to all the whispers in church when – with MaNzuza’s loving support – he formally introduces Mumsy to the congregation as his daughter. “It’s a new thing for Mumsy to be in an environment where she has a father and a brother Mxolisi (Nay Maps) and she’s loving it. She thinks the Mdletshes are a happy, loving family. It’s exciting for her to be publicly introduced as the pastor’s daughter,” reveals Nomcebo. But the actress warns that it’s not all blue skies for Mumsy now. “She’s a bit worried that if someone is looking for her, it will now be easy to track her down with her new ‘fame’.”

MANIPULATING MASTERMIND

There’s a lot more to the Mdlestshes’ house guest than the Sunday School teacher and respectful daughter that she’s showing them on the surface. Mxolisi’s pal Mastermind (Ntokozo Dlamini) has already caught a glimpse of it. He’s had hearts in his eyes since the moment he bumped into the young woman he calls “KwaMashu’s own Rihanna” at the shisanyama on Tuesday 25 July. And Mumsy’s had that naughty wink in her eye ever since their first meeting. Whether she’s dissing Mastermind’s fancy new car, telling him that she doesn’t date “man-whores” or giving him the run-around, Mumsy is having fun. “Mumsy loves the attention from Mastermind. She is a predator and she takes pleasure in playing with guys and dangling them around her fingers. She is a master manipulator,” warns Nomcebo. But on Friday 18 August, DK (Sonto Maphumulo) shows Mastermind a newspaper headline that sends him running to confront Mumsy about why exactly she left Swaziland. It looks like Mumsy’s ex-boyfriend Terror (Sipho Ngema) – the man she put behind bars – is on the prowl.

FLIRTING WITH DISASTER

“She is horrified at the fact that Terror is out. She will need to make a choice: run or confess and ask for help,” says Nomcebo. “Terror is everyone’s worst nightmare, he is a dangerous thug and that’s what Mumsy loved about him, but she snitched on him and stole his money and she knows best of all that anyone that crosses Terror is as good as dead,” reveals Nomcebo. Like Mastermind, Mumsy loves to break the rules to get her blood racing, which is how she got tangled up with a thug like Terror. “Mumsy is very sneaky, she has many colours. She loves to dice with danger,” says the actress. “As a performer, it’s quite difficult to portray someone like Mumsy as she has such different personalities. In a second she will go from seductive to sincere, from happy to emotional, but I’m loving every moment.”

TERROR ON THE DOORSTEP

On Wednesday 23 August, Mumsy finds a cunning hiding spot for her garbage bag full of Terror’s stolen cash: one that will thrill long-time Uzalo viewers. And Terror himself arrives in KwaMashu on her trail on Thursday 24 August, all smiles and charm. “This is horrifying for her because nobody sees this monster in front of them and all seems like it’s about to go south,” reveals Nomcebo. All too soon she’s proven right. Terror shows his true face during the middle of dinner with the Mdletshes on Monday 28 August. But Mumsy might not know her new family as well as she thinks she does. As Mxolisi throws himself in front of his mother and father to protect them, Terror might have met his match.
