A meddling mother
Hilda and Oubaas are bringing Moekie to 7de Laan streets.

7de Laan has had a running theme since starting in 2000: there are a couple of character who’re spoken about but never seen. Swannie the butcher, Evelina the Welman family’s housekeeper and many more. But none match up to Oubaas’s (Pierre van Pletzen) mother Moekie, who gets joy from giving her daughter-in-law Hilda (Annelisa Weiland) more grey hairs. But if those footsteps on Friday 18 August are to be believed, Moekie could be making her long-awaited appearance!
STEPPING ON TOES
There’s tension in the house after Moekie arrived unannounced on Friday 11 August. Not only did she re-arrange the entire flat, she accused Hilda of deliberately giving her food poisoning on Wednesday 16 August. Actress Mari Nieuwoudt, who is playing Moekie, tells us that “she knows in her heart that her scrawny daughter-in-law has no idea how to be a homemaker and this has annoyed her for years. Mari has to date been the voice of her unseen character but now she really gets to be in Moekie’s shoes.
But this time, Moekie’s overstepping the boundaries – she’s interfering in Hilda’s life directly and not just over the phone. On Thursday 17 August, Hilda vents to her friends at Oppiekoffie about how annoying her mother-inlaw is and how much of a mommy’s boy her hubby is. “Moekie has never been fond of Hilda and refused to even come to their wedding because this ‘silly city girl’ would keep her son away from their family home Rondomskrik,” laughs Mari. And it’s going to get worse: on Friday 18 August, Oubaas summons the local dominee (Div de Villiers) to help heal the rift between the women in his life.
