A family who film together, stay together. And in The Ranakas (2017-current), there’s no shortage of sibling rivalry in season 2. “Nothing much has changed! We’re still the same family but viewers will see another side to us and grow with us,” says producer and youngest sister Dineo. Parents Ntate Kgotlaesele and Siba are still on their journey to shape their kids Manaka, Mpumi, Mzingisi “Ziggy”, Ranaka and Dineo into responsible adults and “our parents are very patient. Although we’re all adults, they continue to help us to be better,” explains the 33-year-old.
There’s a full-time addition to the family with Ziggy’s wife Michelle taking a more prominent role after a couple of season 1 cameos. “My dad is a traditional man. He wasn’t comfortable with shinning the light on Michelle before she was an official ‘Ranaka’, but she is now part of the family and viewers will see more of her,” says Dineo.
But it isn’t always picture perfect in the Ranaka household. “There’s always chaos but we’ve learnt our way around it,” laughs Dineo. And for season 2, the siblings will be putting their squabbles aside to find some common-ground. “You always hear people say ‘don’t mix business with family’, but were doing it. This isn’t just a show for us, it’s also a business because we get money from it and we have to go to meetings together and share ideas together. And we’re doing it,” adds the exec producer.
Don’t think that there won’t be any fights though, warns Dineo. “Instead of hiding it for the cameras, we played it out. My sisters and I are mature enough to show audiences how we really deal with our fights. We reveal everything and that’s what makes the reality show how it works!”
