Kate Jackson was living the dream as Sabrina Duncan in Charlie’s Angels (1976-1981), the spy role that made her famous with her co-stars Farrah Fawcett and Jaclyn Smith as agents Jill Munroe and Kelly Garrett. But fame isn’t all that it’s made out to be and in 2010 Kate revealed that “I am financially ruined – I listened to people who claimed to understand money and I made foolish investments that didn’t work out”.
The 68-year-old sued her former 1
financial advisor Richard Francis in 2010 for over $3 million (R40 million) – they settled privately out of court.
Kate’s career has seen better days 2
too – she hasn’t had an acting role since her one-off appearance in a 2007 episode of procedural drama series Criminal Minds (2005-current).
She planned to publish her mem3
oirs in 2011, called The Smart One – a dig at rumours that she was difficult to work with. It was pushed to 2015 and then again to 30 December 2020.
Kate quit after season 3 (1979) – 4
she was told not to take any film jobs and was forced to pass on Meryl Streep’s Oscar-winning role as Joanna in drama series Kramer vs Kramer.
She’s been married three times 5
and while Kate jokes that she isn’t a fan, she adds that “I don’t regret any of my husbands. Except the one that enjoyed emptying my bank account”.
While her Angels co-star Farrah 6
was called “the pretty one”, Kate was no slouch – the former model’s legs were insured for $8 million.
Kate had breast cancer in 1987 7
and 1989 and had radiation and mastectomy treatment. She’s been an advocate for health care and the importance of mammograms ever since.
